Golden Gate Hotel

Las Vegas's oldest hotel was established in 1905. It's small even by downtown standards, but it is inexpensive and is in a dynamite location.

The lobby is adorned with very old pictures of the hotel when it first opened, plus an occasional shot of the San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and Fishermen's Wharf, just to be consistent with its name.

The best reason to stop in at the Golden Gate is for its celebrated 99¢ shrimp cocktails. Served at their Bar & Deli at the back of the main floor, the cocktail includes lots of ocean shrimp, a tangy cocktail sauce, and a wedge of lemon placed in a large tulip glass.

There are 106 clean, simple rooms with cable TV, free local calls phone, and even a computer port.

Golden Gate is a pretty popular hotel, so book ahead.
